Reshmi(Sridevi) receives a head injury in an vehicle accident and becomes like a six-year-old. She leaves the hospital unattended and ends up in a brothel. She is rescued by Somu(Kamal Haasan) . He tends to her care and begins to love her just as she is, never expecting her to one day regain her memory and her intelligence. What happens when she does forms the twist in the tale of this exceptional film, based on the Tamil Moondrum Pirai. The music, by Ilayaraja, is unforgettable.
A poignant tale of human attachment, compassion and loss, "Sadma" is sure to tug at your heartstrings. The movie explores the profoundly complex nature of human relationships. It is especially successful in complicating ideas of romantic and platonic love and sexual attraction -- themes that are often grossly over-simplified in your standard Bollywood flick. But a standard Bollywood flick this is not.
The protagonists, Somu and Reshmi, are ably played by Kamala Hassan and Sridevi, with Silk Smitha adding nuance (and spice) to an already intriguing plot. The movie ends with an entirely unexpected and heart-rending scene when the two protagonists meet for the first time after Reshmi is cured. A must-see movie.
We at MoovieShoovie are huge fans of the talented, charismatic Kamal Hassan. Yet for some reason, he hasn't clicked with audiences in Hindi films. Sadma is sometimes called his best Hindi role. Glamorous Sridevi is believable both as the glamorous socialite and as the mentally-challenged woman, for which she won a best actress award. Film quality is close to DVD.
