Nirmala (Dina Pathak) is a curmudgeon who rules her household with an iron belan. When Manju (Rekha) visits her sister, Nirmala's daughter-in-law, she finds everyone cowed by the lady's stern manner. But Manju, a gregarious, witty and high-spirited girl, will have none of it. The family falls under her spell, none more than Nirmala's single son (Rakesh Roshan) who wants to marry her. But Nirmala remains convinced that she is irresponsible and flighty.... One of Rekha's best roles.
'Khubsoorat' follows the mostly minor tribulations of urban middle-class families, and is thus a quintessentially Hrishikesh Mukherjee film. The movie charms the viewer with its understated characters and the light-hearted simplicity of its themes. Rekha and Ashok Kumar give memorable performances, while Dina Pathak is formidable as an unyielding matriarch. The only jarring note is struck when the members of the Gupta family face-off in a rather over-wrought climax. But cosmic balance is soon restored and the movie ends on a happy note. Good for a lazy afternoon's worth of fun, I give this movie four stars.
One of her better roles.
An amazing comedy with Amitabh Bachan at his comic best. Full time-pass
Sreedevi and Kamal Hassan in a touching film about unconditional love, with a twist at the end.
A musical with sublime poetry, one of the most beautifully crafted Indian films that has ever been made.
