Rano ( Hema Malini) plays a vivacious Punjabi woman married to a sometime-abusive, sometimes-loving man. When her husband is murdered, the panchayat dictates that she marry her younger brother-in-law ( played by Rishi Kapoor); whom she had looked upon as a son... . This film, based on Rajinder Singh Bedi's finest novella, showcases one of Hema's best performances as she wrestles with the situation. Exceptional direction, cinematography ( Shaji Karun) and acting make this film a true must-see.
I expected Ek Chadar to be a weepie , something that would have to be tolerated in the name of "good cinema", but I found it to be a strangely compelling story of the fragile and perilous life of a family in Punjab. Rano ( Hema Malini) is a woman married to an often drunk, sometimes charming tongawalla. When he dies unexpectedly, Rano's panchayat dictates that she marry Mangal ( Rishi Kapoor), her younger brother-in-law, whom she had considered as a son. This is the story of intertwined lives caught up in a fate that that they can neither reject nor accept. This movie will leave you spellbound, especially Rishi Kapoor who is simply amazing, the best of this exceptional cast.
